The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in august presence of Hon’ble Minister of Road, Transport and Highway Shri Nitin Gadkari launched the project on development of ‘Motor Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (Bharat VECTO) for Real Drive Fuel Consumption/CO2 Emissions’
New Delhi, January 17, 2025: The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the autonomous body with Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India in esteem presence of Hon’ble Minister of Road, Transport and Highway Shri Nitin Gadkari; Dr. Reji Mathai, Director- ARAI; Mr. P.K. Banerjee, Chief Executive Director, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Dr. Sukrut S. Thipse, Senior Deputy Director-ARAI and Bharat VECTO Project Leader today launched the project on development of ‘Motor Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (Bharat VECTO) for Real Drive Fuel Consumption/CO2 Emissions’, a landmark project in India’s homologation process. The developed Bharat VECTO will leverage to calculate the realistic fuel consumption/CO2 emissions from Heavy Duty Vehicles (HDVs) (GVW > 3.5 tons) on drive cycle basis in line to Europe, USA, Japan, China, etc. and it will be a part of BS-VII regulation.
SCOE (Standing Committee on Implementation of Emission Legislations) felt the need of this development as part of BS-VII and directed ARAI, Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to support for development work, with ARAI directed to be the initiator. Accordingly, ARAI has taken all necessary initiatives along with OEMs and formed consortium with the support of SIAM. Under Bharat VECTO project, different mission profiles will be developed to cover all HDVs categories, driving patterns, road terrains, etc. The developed tool will be evaluated on selected vehicle categories before finalization for use. ARAI will put all efforts along with project partners for development of Bharat VECTO and make available in Bharat Stage-VII and cater to Internal Combustion Engines driven vehicles, Electric Vehicles (EVs), Fuel Cell EV and Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) in phased manner.
ARAI is showcasing its technology and services at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 Stall no. H11-04, Bharat Mandapam; H2-02, Yashobhoomi; H1-A14, India Expo Centre & Mart from 17th to 22nd January 2025.
ARAI is displaying its innovation in green mobility and safety technology along with an extensive service portfolio. Concept Demo of Over-Head Automated Charging Device- ARAI’s one of the pathbreaking projects in association with IIT-Madras is on display at Bharat Mandapam. Concept Demo of Over-Head Automated Charging Device (OH-ACD) represents a leap forward in fast charging solutions. The 600kW charging power, 1000V Voltage, 600A Current is ready for fast charging and is designed to meet the demands of the evolving transportation landscape. Resulting in a perfect blend of cutting-edge technology, robust design, and user-friendly features.
Along with OH-ACD, the organization is also be displaying its in-house ADAS Validation Platform, a Light Commercial Vehicle with E-Axle, 117 HP Engine for European customer and Battery Management System Training Kit. Moreover, the innovative Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Powertrain holds a significant position in the curation. These technologies will be instrumental in defining India’s readiness for faster adoption of green mobility.
For components, systems and sub-systems, ARAI has a dedicated service portfolio for certification and providing support in developmental validation which are listed at stall number H2-02, Yashobhoomi. At the venue, ARAI is also showcasing the Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) Bike and Battery Management System Kit built by ARAI experts along with Light Weight Components from ARAI Fatigue Material Centre of Excellence, and Engine Models.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Reji Mathai, Director said, “It is a great pleasure to host Hon’ble Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari and have his presence for the launch of Bharat VECTO project. Ministry of Road Transport and Highway has played a significant role in enabling ARAI guide the auto industry towards one direction. Hence, ‘Motor Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool for Real Drive Fuel Consumption/CO2 Emissions’ will be instrumental in accelerating the momentum for industry-wide adoption of green mobility.
ARAI, while being a major stakeholder in homologation and developmental testing and standardization has also been fundamental in innovating technologies for sustainable mobility like Over-Head Automated Charging Device, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Powertrain, which are at display at Bharat Mobility Global Expo. We are thrilled to showcase these technologies and drive conversations for greener tomorrow.”
